Vervio

Vervio is a small historic village in Media Valtellina, with signs that hint to its first settlement going back to around the year 1000.  It is sat on the right hand bank of the River Adda at the foot of Monte Masuccio in a naturally beautiful area.

Once the feudal property of the Venosta family, and while it is largely a rural village, it has retained a sense of elegance through the presence of stately homes with ornate green stone entrance ways, the coats of arms belonging to noble families such as the Lavizzari, wall decorations, railed windows and creative chimneys.

Walking through the main square you’ll spot the Parish Church of Sant’Ilario from a long way off thanks to its tall bell tower (an original from the Roman times, later transformed into a more Baroque style);  the church’s first mention was in 1257 but it has undergone various reworkings in the subsequent periods.

From the centre of the town, there’s a road threading up through the vineyards to the hamlet of Rogobello, where the Parish Church of Santi Sebastiano and Fabiano from the Baroque period can be found. Believed to have been built in the 14th century, you’ll get spectacular views over the valley floor and the opposing valley slopes from the churchyard.

Throughout the summer months, a hike around alpine meadows and lakes is a must – and the climb up to Alpe Schiazzera fits the bill perfectly. You’ll walk up the valley along the Saiento mountain stream, crossing green chestnut groves and meadows with typical huts called ‘maggenghi’ with old stone barns beside them, and through mountainous forests. Once you reach Sùsen (elevation 1,508 metres), the climb continues until you reach the Rifugio Schiazzera at 2,080 metres above sea level.

From here, there are options for all abilities: head towards Valgrosina on the waymarked Sentiero Italia trail, into Switzerland’s Valposchiavo, or drop down to Baruffini above Tirano. The gentlest hike option takes around one hour and escorts you to the lakes below the summit of Monte Masuccio, revealing a vast panorama of the Adamello mountain range and the Rhaetian Alps.
