Forty murals, spread across three of Aprica’s six districts, introduce visitors to Aprica’s mesmerising mountain life, where tradition and nature reign. Commissioned by the town itself in 2000, the locally based, Veneto-born artist Alcide Pancot has illustrated the town’s heritage including pivotal events in its history, using his own distinct, almost photographic style.
Setting off the from the Santa Maria district in town, you’ll come across ‘La caccia all’orso’ (The bear hunt), the first in a series of frescoes on the charming buildings of this characteristic mountain village. With scenes depicting the first hotel, the first cable car, the transhumance, and the coal industry, expect a visual deep-dive into Aprica’s history.
Continuing towards Dosso, admire the mountain plants and flowers – of which edelweiss is irrefutably queen – portrayed in their natural environment. Over in San Pietro, the murals depict Alpine animals, reflecting the dreamlike nature that can be explored on the paths and trails around Aprica, which is part of the Parco delle Orobie Valtellinesi. Bears, eagles and chamois are the ones to keep an eye out for — both on and off the murals.
While visitors are encouraged to let their imagination run wild amongst the rocky slopes, crystal-clear lakes and rich larch forests, each district of the town has a useful QR code relating to the murals so that you can learn more about the artwork and the creator.
