The church, which was first mentioned in a document in 1257, was the parish church of Lovero from 1598 to 1825. The current building is the result of a 15th century intervention that enlarged and changed the original orientation of the church; the Romanesque-style bell tower and some walls of the original building have been preserved. The interior of the church consists of a single nave and a 17th century loggia on the north-west façade. The interior is particularly impressive with its numerous, partly fragmented frescoes, which only give an idea of what the church might have looked like in its heyday.
The best-preserved decorations on the north-west wall show a group of saints accompanied by the Pietà and the Nativity. For stylistic reasons, these frescoes are attributed to the painter Giovannino da Sondalo, who also worked in Vervio and Mazzo. The presbytery houses marvellous frescoes by Cipriano Valorsa from the second half of the 16th century. The carved, gilded and painted tabernacle in the form of a small temple by Alessandro Locheti di Lovero (1582) is also of art-historical significance. The high altar, which supports the tabernacle, is the work of Giovan Battista Del Piaz (1708), who is also the sculptor of the wooden statue of St. Catherine of Siena on the altar on the right-hand.
On the north-east side of the church, a quadrangular ossuary is located. It stands out less for its architectural structure than for the ceiling decorated by the painter Giovan Battista Muttoni, as well as for the fresco ‘Christ on the cross with Madonna and saints’ from the 16th century.
