The territory around Tirano is rich in history and, for those who wish to spend a day with their family in the name of art, the Media Valtellina boasts a unique concentration of historic palaces that tell the identity of the territory, its culture and its traditions. A true cultural destination that has always known how to underline its hidden treasures and that knows how to accompany travellers on an exciting journey through time to discover and learn about the history and beauty of Valtellina's architectural monuments.
In the heart of the historic centre of Tirano, a visit to the fascinating Palazzo Salis is a must. This ancient and splendid residence houses a museum circuit and was in the 17th and 18th centuries one of the most important political meeting points in Valtellina. Without forgetting the splendid Palazzo Merizzi, one of the most visited and photographed places in the area, with its marvellous square-shaped courtyard of honour and interior rooms decorated in Louis XIV style. A few kilometres from Tirano, in the village of Teglio, Palazzo Besta is considered one of the most important Renaissance residences in Lombardy, housing important fresco cycles on mythological, biblical and historical themes, including several scenes from the Aeneid. In Grosio, on the other hand, there is the historic Villa Visconti Venosta, the summer residence of the family of the same name, surrounded by a vast park that is public nowadays. Inside its walls the Villa offers a splendid museum with antique furniture and a collection of precious art objects.
All historic palaces in Media Valtellina can be visited with guided tours according to the opening hours.
