If you’re looking for an unchallenging winter walk with just a small amount of climbing but expansive views over Aprica and the peaks of the eastern Orobic Alps (including Monte Torena), then Pian di Gembro is unbeatable.
Once inside the Pian di Gembro Nature Reserve, park at the restaurant and look for the start of the trail. It’s a circular loop with several info boards documenting the area’s botanical richness, geological peculiarities and history. After winding through the wetlands and darting in and out of coniferous forests, you reach the highlight of the walk: an incredibly panoramic spot at the Church of San Fortunato with hard-to-beat views over Valtellina.
Standard snowy winter walking equipment is recommended (snowshoes, poles, and crampons if necessary).
